Swift Treatment for Plantar Warts

Plantar warts may not be the world’s most painful or dangerous condition, but they make up for it by being unsightly, potentially embarrassing, and—until recently—very frustrating and uncomfortable to treat.

But that’s changed in a big way thanks to a new system, called Swift Microwave Therapy, that is now available at Burlington County Foot & Ankle Associates!

If you’ve developed one or more suspicious-looking growths on your feet that you think may be warts, it’s time to give our office a call.

Swift Treatment for Plantar Warts

What Are Plantar Warts?

Warts are fleshy, grainy, raised bumps in the skin that are caused by an infection of the human papillomavirus, or HPV. A plantar wart simply means that the wart is located somewhere on the foot.

The infection can penetrate the upper layers of skin through tiny cuts or weak points—often too small for you to notice.

If you look closely at a wart, you may notice that it disrupts the normal lines and ridges that cross your skin, and may even have one or more noticeable black “pinpoints” inside, which are actually clotted blood vessels.

Warts are usually not medically dangerous, but they can be very frustrating and embarrassing. They can also be painful, depending on how much pressure or friction they are exposed to as you walk or wear certain shoes.

Treating Plantar Warts with Swift Microwave Therapy

In most medical clinics, warts are still usually treated using either a chemical agent or liquid nitrogen to burn, peel, or freeze the wart. Although wart treatment using these methods is often effective eventually, it may require many treatment sessions to achieve the best results. Individual sessions can be

painful, and there may be bleeding, collateral damage to healthy skin, and annoying aftercare to deal with.

Swift Microwave Therapy is a revolutionary new technology that uses an innovative approach to deliver  much faster, safer, more comfortable, and more convenient results.

During the appointment, your wart is lightly debrided (this is quick and painless), then a small device is used to bombard the area of the wart with microwaves to a predetermined depth for 2-3 seconds. This might cause some very brief and minor discomfort during those two to three seconds, comparable to a fast, hot sensation, but immediately dissipates.

The microwaves “excite” water molecules, which heat up to not only treat the infected tissue, but to draw the attention of your body’s immune system. Your body then naturally begins to attack and eliminate the virus, which will ultimately cause the wart to disappear on its own without needing to be cut out, burned, or frozen off.

Since Swift doesn’t break the skin, no bandaging or aftercare is needed. You can go right back to your normal activities.

A single treatment session typically lasts no longer than about 15 minutes. Some people only require one session, although 2-3 is more typical.

Advantages of Swift Microwave Treatment for Warts

To recap, there are several major advantages of choosing Swift Microwave Therapy over traditional wart removal therapies, including:

  • Higher success rate
  • Much less painful
  • No damage to healthy skin
  • No aftercare required
  • Helps eradicate the underlying viral infection, rather than just removing the wart itself
  • Lower risk of warts recurring

If you’ve been frustrated or disappointed by wart treatments in the past, we strongly encourage you to consider Swift. It’s an especially good choice for kids and for people with diabetes, but it’s quickly become our go-to treatment for most all of our patients.

Can I Treat Warts at Home?

We do not recommend any home treatments for warts, including “home remedies” you find online as well as wart removal kids you can find at the pharmacy. Research consistently shows that these treatments have little to no effect on warts.

If you’ve found that a home remedy worked for you in the past, very likely it was a coincidence. Many warts do eventually go away on their own, although this process can take months or years in some cases.

Wart Prevention Tips

Once your warts have been treated successfully, it’s important to understand where warts come from so you can take appropriate steps to keep them from coming back.

  • Protect your feet with shower shoes when walking through damp, warm, public areas, such as around pools and in locker rooms. These are the types of conditions where the virus can thrive and be more easily transmitted.
  • Keep your feet clean and dry daily. If your socks get soaked with sweat halfway through the day, bring a clean pair you can change into later on.
  • Don’t pick at warts if you have them. Not only can this cause you more pain than you need, but it can help the virus transmit from your feet to other parts of your body. Whenever you do have to touch your warts for one reason or another, wash your hands as soon as you can afterward.
